OLD CRAP ON TAP
I've added a new link section if you want quick access to some of my older junk. Mostly long-form items with some parodies thrown in. Since a lot of you requested it, I also put a link to the ancient 1998 "Scumbaggio." Just scroll down the left sidebar to "retreads." Credit/blame for the idea goes to the ever-persistent Carol T.
GREENWICH VILLAGE IDIOT
I'll be in NYC next Monday night (in the vicinity of NYU) and eager for amusement. Gothamite readers interested in organizing a pub crawl are encouraged to drop me an email.
RUSS MEYER 1922-2004
Reader Bill H. is curious why I didn't note the passing of Russ Meyer last week:
Dude: I can't believe you didn't mention the death of Russ Meyer... FASTER PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL! was the greatest movie ever!
Agreed, and my apologies for the oversight.
I can't really add much to the many scholarly requiems, other than a personal remembrance. I was introduced to the Russ Meyer ouevre in 1979 at the Highway 75 Drive-In, which was featuring a triple bill of "Vixens," "Super Vixens," and "Beneath the Valley of the Ultra Vixens." In short, the most awesome film festival I have ever attended. I almost felt bad about sneaking into the show in the trunk of my brother's Chevelle. That experience spurred a love of exploitation movies that continues to this day.
I have no idea what kind of person Russ Meyer was in real life, but he made some of the best celluloid ever - cherished by film school auteurs and dirtbag teenagers alike. He will be missed. And for Bill H., I present the greatest scene from the greatest movie ever.
I don't know what to think of you now. I went to a Russ Meyer movie with my husband and his brother and had to leave before it was over because it made me physically sick. You really like him? This is a joke, right? More of your excellent satire? Tell me it is, please.

You were in the trunk of a Chevelle and didn't crash through the factory installed rust? Color me dubious.

I just don't get it. I have been watching those girls do their step class on the beach for 36 minutes and nothing much else has happened.

Where's the piece you wrote after that James Lileks hit piece was published and linked to across the blogosphere? That was hilarious and I was disappointed to see that not many people seemed to pick up on that.
