Late February means one thing around these parts: a brief furlough from winter in the Rat Pack desert paradise of fabulous Palm Springs, California. The glory of postwar American culture - in architecture, design, automobiles, and music - lives on there, and is celebrated each February at Modernism Week. This was the fifth ModWeek for me and my gal, and did not disappoint; stops included the vintage car show, the vintage travel trailer show, the Braniff sexy 60's stewardess outfit show, steak, eggs, and more mod cocktail parties than you can shake a swizzle stick at. But the best was a stop at the Palm Springs Air Museum to take a gander at the warbirds. It was a stark reminder that all the gleaming postwar optimism of Palm Springs came with a very steep price tag, paid for by America's greatest generation. Hope you enjoy my holiday slide show.
