The Deadtown Tavern is a great little hot rod hangout in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where the beer flows and the music sizzles. Early Thursday morning after closing time, owner Shawn Howard and his bar manager went outside to shoo away some vagrants, when one visciously attacked them with a pipe. Shawn Howard died Friday. He was 35.
Shawn leaves behind hundreds of friends and admirers. His family also faces enormous medical expenses. If you can spare a few simolians, please visit Deadtown's memorial site and drop some in the PayPal bucket. Thanks.
UPDATE: Behold the state of criminal justice in Tulsa. Jennifer Chancellor posts that the local DA, Tim Harris, has declined to prosecute Terry Badgewell, the scumbag who beat Shawn Howard to death with a pipe. Why? because Badgewell claims self-defense.
[Badgewell] claims one of the two men hit him with brass knuckles. Well, the guys DID have brass knuckles on them, because they are working very late in a historic district in part of town that's also near a homeless shelter and the police station. Shawn had been fighting the city for FIVE YEARS to put better lighting on the streets in that area. Since they haven't, he had to protect himself. Now, look what happens.
...Somebody please explain the self-defense law to me. Because [bar manager] Josh has nothing but defense wounds, and the asshole who's claiming self defense is completely unharmed.
Well, Jennifer, I guess in these classic "he-said-he-said" cases, the keen solomonic mind of DA Sherlock Harris says go with the violent ex-con vagrant. Too bad Shawn Howard couldn't back up Josh Martin's story, since he is... um, dead.
Read Jennifer's blog entry as well as her comments in this post. We likely disagree on 99% of other issues, but on this we are lockstep.
