Ball of the Day
Nominated by CJ Wittkop, who writes:
Attached is a picture of Nuclear Power Training Unit Ballston Spa. It's in upstate NY near Saratoga Springs. Also known as the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (KAPL)-Kesselring Site Operation. It consists of prototype reactors for Nuclear Powered Navy Ships, such as the Ohio Class Ballistic Missile Sub and the original and new Seawolf Subs. It is also one of the NPTU sites for training Enlisted and Officer Naval Nuclear Power Operators. I spent a year there learning to be a "Nuke", which is the hands-on part of the training.
Anyway, the big ball is the D1G Containment Unit, affectionately known as the "Dig Ball." It was decommissioned back in the mid 90's but they've recycled it before, since it was originally designed to test the S2G Reactor for SSN 575, the original Seawolf. They converted it to test the D1G Reactor (Nuclear Cruiser Reactor) when they started that project.
If you take a moment, and look at the cars in the parking lot for reference, you can gauge its enormity.
