Bolus is the Latin word for "ball," and a medical term for a globular mass passing through the digestive system. It is also the name of this site: a group blog founded solely for the enjoyment of the contributors and others who share our enthusiasm for stiff drinks, good yarns, snappy tunes, curious machinery, and well-turned females.
Certainly there is no shortage of websites devoted to these topics. But a brief review will affirm that they are, in large measure, garish catchpenny peepshows designed for the amusement of callow and semi-literate boys. Bolus will seek, by contrast, the higher standards of the Gentleman Rogue; the jaded libertine whose tastes and have been forged and refined in the crucible of experience. He is the man handy with an acetylene torch and a cocktail shaker, and knows that technology and cheesecake improves with vintage. He is the hard-bitten cynic who demands two-fisted adventure, speed, tasteful nudity, and fart jokes peppered with references to George Bernard Shaw and Kurosawa.
Bolus accepts this gauntlet, and strives to present the Gentleman Rogue with words and images that will remain of interest long into his dotage. We will eschew sports and politics and the flashy cheap gewgaws of the moment. Our aesthetic ideal will be equal parts literary review, stag magazine, and grease-stained J.C. Whitney catalog.
